WEEK 2 MAYA

This week we learned how to make lego figurines, and we found the reference image in our image search. I imported it into MAYA.
The first step was to make the head of the lego figurine, which we got by tweaking the columns. To make it softer around the edges we used a 3 viewing.
Then we got the body by adjusting the sides with squares.
After that we made the legs first, and only after the legs we made the middle connector. In this curved connector I learned how to use the resize tool to change a part of the curved surface directly to a straight surface. We also learned to use control+D to copy one of our finished legs.
For the hand we also used two parts to complete it, the arm and its hand. In the arm we used a bit of sculpting and soft movement, and then made the protruding sleeve. I filled the hole that was used to connect the hand, but I used a stretch. I found that there was always a small opening that wouldn’t close, and then I tried to fill the hole, and eventually it worked. For the hand we used pip to make it. I learned that holding down control and then deleting the line or point can remove the part linked with it at the same time.

What I learned from this model is: the closest simple geometry before making the model will make me think more clearly during the production process, and do not have the stereotype that LEGO miniature is an industrial product can only be adjusted with regular geometry, some times we can also use sculpture in between.

WEEK1 Design for Animation, Narrative Stuctures & Film Language

The instructor introduced the main content of the class and gave us an overview of what we needed to do at the end of the class – a critical writing essay and presentation – as well as what critical writing is really like and where we should look for references.

WEEK1 nuke

This week, the instructor was unable to open the first week’s files during class, so we started the second week’s files first.
We looked at many screenshots from the movie and analyzed how the elements in it guided the picture. Not only light, but also color and shape. We also looked at some compositional analysis of the images.
Then we explained some lighting arrangements. The teacher told us that there are usually at least three lights in a picture, one light illuminates the main character’s face and another light gives out from the side to emphasize the silhouette. Also there will be a light behind the main character, also to give some outline.
This week’s assignment is time and we have to shoot six pictures.

Instruction of photos

In the first image I wanted to capture the movement of the object over a period of time through time-lapse photography. At the same time the traffic reminds me of water flow, and time is like water flowing away without looking back, this is also my reflection on their commonality.

The second image is a flower in a pot. This perspective records both the opening of the flower and the fading of the leaves. This is also a manifestation of what time brings to it. Because I think time is an invisible and untouchable matter, I want to reflect the concept of time through the comparison of different states of the same object in the same picture.

The third and fourth pictures are a set of changes brought about by different times in the same scene. My main idea is still to reflect the existence of time through comparison.

The fifth and sixth pictures are some events that will remind people of time.

The fifth picture was taken when my mother was about to return to China, and it represents parting and sadness. The parting is a specific event that reflects the transience of time.

The sixth image was taken from the window of the Royal Britannia as I looked out. After all these years, I wonder if the sailors and the royal family would have seen the same scene that we see?

WEEK 1 VFX foundation

I build the car and flying mouse in frist class.

The first week of the MAYA course was my first exposure to 3D software, and the instructor introduced some basic functions in the morning. I used the sculpting function in the morning to sculpt a square into a mouse with big ears, which I named Flying Mouse. In the afternoon we searched the internet for a picture of a Tesla car and tried to model it. I got a little confused while making the wheels, and used the move button for the first time to look like a Chinese dumpling. But my friend on the side told me what to do, so I modified it. Finally we put it in a beautiful scene and set up the camera and the shooting range. We also made shadows for it to make it look more realistic.
This was my first 3D project and I thought it would be fun and creative. The teacher made us understand what to add to a model project (the model itself, colors, lighting, camera and some other details).
