WEEK8 Design for Animation, Narrative Stuctures & Film Language

In week 8 we covered the requirements in specific critical writing, such as the use of some specific vocabulary and the structure of paragraphs. The teacher also divided us into small groups to discuss and take turns coming over to help us with points of confusion. But the main focus was on specific formatting issues.

WEEK7 Design for Animation, Narrative Stuctures & Film Language

This session focused on group discussions, where each of us shared our own topics and gave input to others. We had not only VFX students in the group, but also animation students, so we were fortunate to hear the ideas of students from different disciplines. One of the boys mentioned that he wanted to discuss the representation of animation in historical themes. I thought this was an interesting topic because you need to consider how the characteristics of animation itself play out on serious historical themes, and this issue is actually the same as the animated documentary we discussed in class earlier. So I’m looking forward to seeing that part of it.
My topic is still discussing whether AI training is infringing in drawing training nowadays. And I have gathered some material.

WEEK5 Design for Animation, Narrative Stuctures & Film Language——homework

I think animated documentaries are an interesting format, although it is sometimes difficult to define what is an animated documentary, those that have some animated segments inserted into the documentary or those that use animation as the main form of documentation? But either way, the animation part does have a part in the narrative, both positive and negative. The positive part is undoubtedly that it allows the viewer to better understand what the author needs to say, especially in the microcosm of physics, where the use of animation makes everything intuitive and simple; at the same time, based on the different styles of animation, they can sometimes make the viewer feel more relaxed and witty, because people have some fixed opinions about animation as a way of expression (and such It also makes the viewer feel more relaxed and witty at times, because people have some fixed opinions about animation as a form of expression (and such opinions are usually old-fashioned, such as animation is used to pass time), so it also makes the viewer feel more relaxed about the documentary.
Compared to traditional video expressions, animation can be treated as more subjective, allowing people to focus on what the author wants to say. However, it also gives less information to the viewer, and the animated presentation destroys part of the persuasiveness of the documentary. The most important elements of a documentary are the real human and the discursive elements.
But if I were asked whether I think animation is an acceptable form of documentary, my answer would be “yes”. Because animation does not undermine the realism and humanity of documentary, which I think is the most important part of documentary.
But I also don’t think that simply adding illustrative animation to a documentary makes it an animated documentary. I think that if a documentary can be called an animated documentary, then its main means of expression must be animation, otherwise it will be difficult to call it an animated documentary.
Some people think that animation is for children, but I don’t agree. Because animation is just a way of expression, the most important part in the expression is always the content of the narrative, not the form. Is it possible that in today’s society people still misunderstand something because of the way it is expressed? And animation also allows people to understand the content better, which does make it easier for some people to see the documentary rather than treating it as a burden – when people are watching it.

Homework for week4  Design for Animation, Narrative Stuctures & Film Language

Wonder is an experimental film created by Japanese artist Mirai Mizue, who, as a modernist, has undoubtedly been influenced by many recent art styles, but I think it is difficult to define whether this film belongs directly to a particular style. In this short film we can observe that it has a strong minimalist overtone, but in contrast to the minimalist view of the work as a pure form and a pure medium of communication, this short film does not neglect the expression of content and emotion. Although its expression is not narrative and continuous.
I have divided this short film into three parts, in the first part it consists only of black and white point and line variations, in the second part the author adds color variations and blends, and in the third part it adds rich brush strokes and strong color variations. I think it maps the evolution and expression of the world. From the first single-celled organisms, countless species have gradually evolved, and even humans have emerged. And after human beings came rich art and culture, countless evolution and encounter of ideas and technology. This is perhaps the meaning of miracle.
The author calls his animation cell animation, because in his concept he believes that the world is composed of layers of individuals, and he abstracts each individual as a cell. Perhaps this is the visual element that appears the most in the short film. In this work he uses hand-drawing to create a form of animation that is very common in the development of modern new media and computer technology. His production time is 365 days, which means that the artist continues to create drawings every day of the year. This means in a way completes part of the content of his short film.
Of course, everyone’s interpretation of an experimental short film will vary, but the overall tone of the film is undoubtedly upward, and the combination of relaxing and smooth music brings a unique visual enjoyment.
